Nowhere to Call Home or Experiencing Housing Instability?
We know that these can be very difficult times for students and their families.
If you or your family lives in one of the situations listed below, then you may be protected under the McKinney-Vento Act
- You an unaccompanied youth without parent or guardian
- In a shelter or transitional housing program
- In a motel, hotel, or weekly rate housing
- Doubled up with friends or relatives because you cannot find or afford housing
- In an abandoned building, public space, car or other inadequate accommodation
Protections under the McKinney-Vento Act allow children and youth in temporary or unstable housing to have the right to
- Stay in the same school.
- Get school transportation, even across district lines.
- Immediately enroll in school without education records, immunizations records, or proof of residency.
- Participate fully in school activities, including before and after school.
- Get free school meals.
- Receive other education services.
