What is a school psychologist?

School psychologists help students succeed academically, socially, emotionally, and behaviorally. School psychologists do this by working with teachers, parents, and other professionals to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments for all students.  Specifically at Edison, the school psychologists:

  • collaborate with teachers, parents, and administrators to find effective solutions for learning and behavior problems
  • assist in developing support systems for students and families to reduce risk factors that interfere with students' success at school and build resiliency
  • assess students' cognitive, functional, and social/emotional skills as well as their learning environment to determine eligibility for special education services
  • help students, families, and the school community cope with and manage crises such as death, illness, or community trauma
  • promote tolerance, understanding, and appreciation of diversity within the school setting
